I've interrupted our tales with a semi-cleaned garden, so it comes that early spring of 2007 has began with the cleaning. At first we put in order the place of vegetable garden in order to be able to sow in time. We dragged along the iron-framed of greenhouse, in which we planned to cultivate green pepper, tomato and cucumber already since April. Then we teared down the toilet parading right in the center of garden. Meantime, thanks for God, the flower bed I built last autumn was blooming in all its adornments.

Egy félig kitakarított kertnél hagytuk abba a történetet, így adódik, hogy 2007 kora tavasza újabb takarítással kezdődött. Legelőször a veteményes helyét tettük rendbe, hogy időben tudjunk veteményezni. Hátracipeltük a vasvázas fóliasátrat, amiben a tervek szerint paprikát, paradicsomot, uborkát neveltünk már áprilistól. Aztán elbontottuk az udvar kellős közepén díszelgő WC-t. Közben hála égnek az ősszel megalapozott ágyás már hozta a várt formáját.

As I mentioned in the previous post I was thinking about organic shaped plant beds along the verges of garden. Regarding the style of garden I was dreaming of the mixture of English and rustic gardens. The little walnut tree in the center of garden gave me the first basis point, it was designated to the apex of a large plant bed. Additionally I used two trees, a Siberian elm and a Persian silk tree to triangulate the area of "plant semi-island". I planted different shrubs between them like evergreens: viburnum, euonymus and 2 smaragd thujas in the corners. Among deciduous shrubs I attempted the syringa, dogwood, red barberry, caryopteris, and some more flowering shrubs. It's so funny to see how lonely those little plants are standing in moving sand, and yes, for some of them the year was ended sooo badly.

Right next to the large plant bed I imagined a little bed of roses. Inside the different coloured bush roses planted in half-round there are two crambling roses and giving an evergreen background also in winter we planted a row of pencil cedar behind them. And since early spring we were just watering and watering. Meantime the house in the neighbour was quickly built up, this way changing some of our plans of course. 

Ahogy említettem, a telek széle mentén organikus formájú növényszigetekben gondolkodtam. A kert stílusát első körben valahol az angol és a rusztikus között lőttem be. A kert közepén levő kis diófa adta az első bázispontot, így a nagyobb növényszigetnek azt jelöltem ki a csúcsául. A félszigetet két másik fa csemetével, egy puszta szillel és egy selyemakáccal háromszögeltem be. Közöttük szabálytalan elszórásban ültettem, az örökzöldek közül: bangitát, kecskerágót, a félsziget sarkait pedig 2 oszlopos smaragd tujával jelöltük. Lombhullatók közül orgonával, tarka levelű sommal, vérborbolyával, kékszakállal, meg még pár egyéb virágos bokorral próbálkoztam. Vicces, ahogyan a pergő homokban árválkodnak a kis növénykék, hát igen sokukra nem valami jó sors várt.

Közvetlenül az első nagyobb félsziget után egy kisebb rózsaágyat képzeltem el. A félkör íven ültetett vegyes színű bokorrózsákon belül két futórózsa került, ami mögé virginiai boróka sort ültettem, hogy télen is adjon egy kis örökzöld hátteret. És ment a szorgos locsolgatás már kora tavasz óta. Közben a szomszéd ház is gyorsan épült, ezzel persze pár tervet újra is kellett gondolni.

Our next big challenge was to install a lawn in part of the garden. We could see instantly that we are not able to establish an automatic sprinkler system in such a large yard, but despite of this fact we were optimistic. After ploughing the middle part of the garden here came the biggest joke of the year: the fertilization. We were gleaning accurately all the ads and ordered a whole truckful of mature cow manure, not for small money. In due course, the truck with high sides has arrived and backed in the yard, then as the goods were sliding down we could see a huge mountain of fresh cow(?) manure mixed with straw, fine scentful, as you need. Ok, I know maybe we should have to do something, but who would shovel the manure back? So we shallowed the bitter pill.

We were in the end of April that time. As a working people when we have some spare time to spread the dung, yes, on the long weekend. Maybe I don't need to explain how glad our neighbours were when after a previous year full of hammering we delivered the sweet smell for their sunday lunch. Okay, go ahead. It was middle of May when we finished the preparations of soil, and we did not care of the heat, let's installing a lawn, we will water it constantly - we thought. So this is how we get our first experience: never mind lot of work and watering, the weeds are growing quicker than grass. This way in the rest of the year we were mowing weeds instead of a fine lawn. Of course we decided to install the lawn next year much more earlier.

A következő nagy munkálat egy körülbelüli füvesítés volt. Az rögtön látszott, hogy ekkora területen automata öntözést nem tudunk megoldani, de ennek ellenére optimisták voltunk. A kert középső harmadát felszántottuk, majd következett az év legviccesebb története: a trágyázás. Akkurátusan végignéztük a hirdetéseket, és egy egész teherautó érett marhatrágyát rendeltünk, nem kevés pénzért. Meg is érkezett a magas oldalú teherautó, betolatott, majd lecsusszant róla egy nagy halom szalmával gondosan elkevert friss marha(?)trágya, finom illatosan, ahogy kell. Tudom, talán tehettünk volna valamit, de ki lapátolja vissza? No mindegy lenyeltük a békát.

Ez április végén volt. Dolgozó emberként mikor máskor terítsük szét az árut, mint a hosszú hétvégén ... most mondjam, hogy az előző évi folyamatos kalapálás után mennyire szerettek a szomszédok, amikor a majális ebédjéhez szállítottuk az aromát. Mindegy, túléltük. Mire a terepet előkészítettük már május közepe lett, de hát miért is ne füvesítsünk, majd locsoljuk, gondoltuk. Hát igen, első tapasztalatként láthattuk, hogy a sok munka és locsolás ellenére hogyan nőnek a finom gazak fű helyett. Így az év további részében fű helyett gazat nyírt a gép, s mi gazdagabbak lettünk egy tapasztalattal: jövőre korán füvesítünk.

Most of the plants were also suffering from big heat and dryness, it was a big fight without shadow in moving sand. Anyhow, I tried to animate the desert with some annual flower plants, but I was enriched with new experience: if I sow the seeds of flowers it will never sprout in hot sand.

Meantime the plant islands were fenced as well: beside the common wooden edging I have attempted to install edge with used bricks which fitted much more to my rustic concept.

A növények nagy része is szenvedett a nagy szárazságban, árnyék nélkül, futó homokban ... hát ment a küzdelem. Azért igyekeztem a sivatagba egynyári növényekkel némi színt vinni, de újabb tapasztalattal kellett gazdagodnom: a magról vetett virágok egyike sem kel ki a forró homokban. 

Időközben a növény félszigetek szegélyt is kaptak: a hagyományos fa ágyásszegély mellett már kísérleteztem a bontott tégla szegéllyel, ami sokkal jobban illett a rusztikus koncepciómhoz.

We arranged the area around the old walnut tree standing by the house: we laid down used bricks as edging again and filled the ground with washed gravel (8/16). I do not state that this is friendly with high-heeled shoes, but if you just walk through sometimes it is entirely appropriate, and I like it. Around the walnut tree I've planted some annual flowers, aren't they lovely?

A ház mögötti öreg diófa környékét is rendbe tettük: itt is bontott tégla szegéllyel jelöltük ki a területet, majd mosott kaviccsal (8/16) töltöttük meg. Nem mondom, hogy nagy barátja a magas cipősarkaknak, de arra, hogy néha átjárunk rajta teljesen megfelelő, és tetszik. A diófa köré kis egynyáriakat is ültettem, hát nem bájosak?

I must say some words about the vegetable garden as well, since we had gathered several experience there. For example:

• On moving sand do not start the sowing in the end of March but as soon as the snow is melted. Later the weather is so warm that neither carrot nor parsley seeds will sprout.
• If it is possible water the soil constantly in the phase of germination, and not with watering-pot that will be little or nothing.
• Several kind of seeds are not able to sprout in sand, you can try from the size of beetroot -> the solution, grow seedlings.
• There is a big friend of sand the mole cricket: it sorely thins the seeds, and eats the potatoes as well -> no real solution till now.
• Weeds are growing always quicker than vegetable plants, mainly this is why the early planting is important, ie. go on ahead. Later you need frequent hoeing, because if you let the weeds to grow it will come out later together with the useful plant.

Now I cannot remember more ...

Despite of all of these difficulties we were satisfied, we were getting along nicely, we had some crops as well, and the greenhouse had worked perfectly. Meantime, since beginning of the year I was waiting for baby, so in the end of summer and autumn I've done only some maintenance tasks in the garden. So there came some months - luckily in autumn and winter - when I was dropped in another world.

Szót kell hogy ejtsek a veteményesről is, nos, itt is számos tapasztalattal lettünk gazdagabbak. Például:

• Futóhomokon nem márciusban kezdjük a veteményezést, hanem szinte amint elolvad a hó. Később olyan meleg van, hogy a répa, gyökér ki se kell.
• Lehetőleg csírázási fázisban folyamatosan locsoljuk a vetés, nem kannával, az kevés.
• Egy csomó mag ki se kel a homokban, talán a cékla méretű vetőmag már igen -> megoldás, palántanevelés.
• A homoknak nagy barátja a lótücsök: alaposan tizedeli a vetőmagot, később a krumplit is -> igazi megoldás máig sincs.
• A gaz mindig gyorsabban nő, mint a növény maga, főleg ezért fontos a korai veteményezés, ti. beelőzzünk. Később pedig minél gyakoribb kapálás, mert ha meghagyjuk, gazzal jön a növény is.

Most több nem jut eszembe...

De minden nehézségek ellenére azért elégedettek voltunk, haladtunk, némi termésünk is volt, a fólia is bevált. Közben én már év eleje óta babát vártam, így nyár végén és ősszel csak az alap karbantartások maradtak. Aztán néhány hónapra - hozzáteszem szerencsésen épp az őszi-téli hónapokra - egy másik világba csöppentem.
