We bought our house in 2006. We had not much time to look for the proper house, but I think considering our limits and possibilities we arrived at the best decision. The area itself is 1600 square meter, the house occupies only 110 square meter so there was more than enough space for the garden. Actually I would have liked a smaller one meanwhile my husband a bigger, so somewhere in the middle our expectations were met. Of course now I don't mind this decision, or even I have so many ideas that sometimes I wish we could attach some more square meter to our garden.

A házunkat 2006-ban vásároltuk. Nem volt sok időnk a keresgélésre, de végül szerintem a lehetőségeinkhez képest a legjobb döntést hoztuk. A telek maga 1600 m2, amin a ház csak 110 m2, szóval volt hely a kertnek bőven. Én igazából kisebbet szerettem volna, a férjem meg sokkal nagyobbat, így középütt találkoztak az elképzeléseink. Ma már persze nem bánom, sőt még annyi ötletem van, hogy néha nem bánnám, ha pár száz négyzetmétert még hozzácsapnánk.

The former owner was an elderly couple, they cultivated the area mainly as a vegetable garden. At the same time most of the fruit trees were old and sick, but at first sight it seemed that it will be an easy game. Of course due to lack of proper experience we did not notice that the soil is very sandy. On the one hand this is an advantage because when others have been fighting against drainage we had no problem at all. But today we already know it is really a big challenge to transmute a desert into a lush jungle.

We moved in June and since there was a lot to do on the house itself, in summer 2006 we concentrated on internal renovations. In order to recover as much as possible most of the work we have done by our own hand. Only to give a sample about the volume of work ...

Az előző tulajdonos egy idős házaspár volt, akik főleg haszonkertként művelték a területet. Ugyanakkor a gyümölcsfák többsége már elég öreg és beteg volt, de elsőre úgy tűnt könnyű dolgunk lesz. Persze tapasztalat hiányában azt nem nagyon vettük észre, hogy a föld maga nagyon homokos: ez egyrészt haszon, hiszen a belvizek idején egyáltalán nem volt gondunk. Viszont ma már tudjuk, burjánzó dzsungelt varázsolni a sivatagra, hát, szép feladat.

Júniusban költöztünk, és mivel a házon is rengeteg munka volt, így 2006 nyara inkább a belső felújításokról szólt. Hogy minél több minden elkészüljön, a legtöbb munkát saját kezünkkel végeztük. Csak ízelítőül, hogy látsszon a munka volumene...

But outside the nature was not waiting for us so the carefully cultivated garden became a sea of weeds. I hope that poor former owner man did not walk around there in those days, I'm sure he'd have had a heart attack.

No, de odakint a természet nem várt ránk, így a gondosan művelt földből gaztenger nőtt ki. Remélem szegény előző tulaj bácsi ekkortájt nem járt arra, biztosan szívrohamot kapott volna.

Anyhow we had already started the planning and arranging in our mind. We found out how to divide the garden according to functions. It was clear that the vegetable garden with fruit trees must be placed at the rear of area meanwhile the front part of the garden became a park place. Of course my husband had a dream about big green grass field, but what is beautiful among mountains that is not exactly on the Hungarian Plain, so I encouraged him to try to take off from the idea of lawn & hedge row.

Finally in the autumn we had some time to clean up the garden. We cut out the old sick trees and tried to remove as much trash and rubbish as we could.

Till that time my garden design plan has been formed that I would like plant beds in organic shapes mainly following the verge of garden but in different size. We left some old trees as a basic plant and this year we could only plant one or two young trees.

Mindenesetre fejben azért már elkezdtünk tervezni, rendezgetni. Kitaláltuk hogyan osszuk meg a kertet funkciók szerint. Természetesen adta magát, hogy a hátsó részre kerüljön a haszonkert a gyümölcsfákkal, az elülső 2/3 rész pedig díszkert. A férjem persze nagy zöld gyepet álmodott, de ami szép a hegyek között, az az alföldön nem biztos, így én arra bátorítottam, hogy próbáljunk a gyep & sövénysor ötletétől elrugaszkodni.

Ősszel aztán már volt időnk a kert kitakarítására. Az öreg, beteg fákat kivágtuk, próbáltunk minél több szemetet, törmeléket, növénymaradékot elhordani.

Addigra kialakult bennem, hogy a kertben organikus formájú növényágyakat szeretnék, elsősorban a széleken, de ott különböző nagyságúakat. Néhány fa megmaradt bázisnövényként, ehhez ebben az évben csak egy-két fiatal facsemetét ültettünk el.

In order to be able to admire something I have built the flower bed by the edge of front pavement. First I fenced it with classic wooden edging, then planted with lot of onions of spring flowers and finally some pansies by the edge. I know lot of people call the pansies (and chrysanthemum) for funeral flowers, BUT first of all, please, be more tolerant and have no negative discrimination! :) Moreover, in additon to their tender beauty pansies are very useful flowers. I love that there is something blooming in winter and also in spring it keeps blooming till planting of annual flowers.

Hogy mégis legyen miben gyönyörködni, a bejáratnál lévő járda melletti szegélyágyat már elkészítettem. Ekkor még a hagyományos fa ágyásszegéllyel körbekerítve, sok-sok hagymás növényt dugdostam el a tavaszra, és árvácskákat ültettem. Tudom sokan temetői virágnak tartják (a krizantémmal együtt), de először is kérnék egy kis toleranciát és semmi negatív diszkrimináció :), másrészt a szelíd szépségén felül az árvácska igenis hasznos kis virág. Szeretem, hogy télen is van ami virággal ajándékoz meg, s egyben a tavasszal is kitart az egynyári virágok ültetéséig.

A semi-cleaned garden and lot of ideas were waiting for the spring of 2007.
