City of a Thousand Faces: Eger

Az ezerarcú város: Eger
POSTCARDS

Eger is one of the place in Hungary where we really would like to live in. It is located in North Hungary, very close to Bükk mountains even it has a good climate. The beautiful baroque city centre is full of monuments, churches and the signs of long history like the big castle, but it's very pleasant just to walk in the pedestrian streets, having a coffee, or so. The city has a good beach directly in the centre with Turkish bath, as well. And don't forget that Eger is the centre of one of the most famous wine areas in Hungary. Of course we cannot change our place, so the possibility remains to explore and enjoy the city during our travelling. If you haven't been there yet, it's a must, so let's see some pictures for your inspiration.

Eger az egyik olyan város Magyarországon, ahol igazán szívesen élnénk. Észak-Magyarországon találhatjuk, a Bükk hegység lábánál, mégis kellemes a klímája.

Thanks to the novel "Eclipse of the Crescent Moon" of Géza Gárdonyi all the Hungarian kids know the Turkish siege of Eger Castle. They try to keep these memories in the castle, we can join a very expressive guided tour with good atmosphere. With small children we can mainly walk on the castle walls, but the wax museum and the underground catacombs may be interesting for them, too. You can find more exhibitions inside the castle, we could only run around the Márai's room.

The minaret is the memento of Turkish era. The kid recognized it already from far (say, it was not so hard), and he wanted to go up. The 97 narrow and high steps to climb was not so easy but it's well worth the effort for the unique panorama up there. Prepare husbands for lugging children up and down as well :)

A minaret a török megszállás mementója.

Children are not really compatible with churches but luckily, between two ice-creams we could visit at least the Basilica. Eger Basilica is the second largest in Hungary, and I really love the fresco paintings on the ceiling.

We walked a lot in the centre, and during our stay a folk music festival was held at the Dobó square. Of course we could not miss and visited the wine cellars of Valley of Beautiful Women connecting with a pleasant dinner, but we did not take photos in the dark. Go there and check it personally. :)

Some small advices:
- It is a bad news for fashionistas but the town is really not the place for high heels, hills and steps up and down, cobblestones, so stay by your flats.
- With small children it is a good start and enjoyable program for them to travel the city around with little sightseeing train.

Finally, there were two places which I can recommend warmly:
- one is the Café Frei in the plaza of Agria Park. You can taste fantastic exotic coffee on affordable price, for some of them they offer special cookies as well. You can also buy and bring home the coffees of the brand.
- second one is the Restaurant Arany Oroszlán on Dobó square. I'm not saying this is the heaven for gourmands, but they are in friendship with spices - if you know what I mean -, so each of the dishes that we ate there were "allright". Ok, the plum pie with vanilla ice-cream was very "allright" :).

Well, I hope I managed to catch your fancy to visit this lovely town!

- a másik hely a Dobó téren található Arany Oroszlán Étterem.
