The Beauty of Lilies

Liliomok szépsége
GARDEN >> Park and flowers

After the full blooming of roses in the garden the lead role is taken over by the lilies. I discovered these flowers a bit late thus I've planted the first lilies only 2 years ago, but I must say it is really worth growing these plants. Once you dig the bulbs it grows and blooms each years ... and they are beautiful. I'm pretty sure that I'll collect additional species in the future.

In the blossoming time of lilies we can find other "lily-like" flowers in the garden. It's a bit misleading since most of these flowers has "lily" in their common name as well, but they don't belong to the family of Liliums. For example look at the Daylilies (Hemerocallis): their flower really resemble to "true" lilies meanwhile the leaves and habit differ.

A liliomok virágzási idejében más "liliomszerű" virágokat is találhatunk a kertben. Egy kicsit megtévesztő, ugyanis ezeknek a növényeknek a nevében benne van a liliom szó, mégsem tartoznak a liliomfélékhez (Lilium). Például nézzük a sásliliomot (Hemerocallis): a virágzatuk valóban nagyon hasonlít a liliomhoz, azonban levélzetre és habitusra különböznek.

The Torch lily (Kniphofia uvaria) has quite different appearence than lilies, but even has amazing shape and chrominance transition of its flowers.

Finally let me show you my Yuccas, the Adam's needle: they are perfect choise in our garden with lot of sun and dry sandy ground. In Hungary this specie of Yucca filamentosa is called "Palm Lily" so that is why I take them a kind of lilies although they belong to the family of Asparagaceae. I love the couple of sharp sword-shaped leaves and the innocent soft white flowers.
